Introduction
Luxembourg is a small country surrounded by Germany and France. In fact, Luxembourg is so small that most people haven’t even heard of it … let alone vacationed there. Because so few people know about it, Luxembourg tourism is quite small. If only everyone knew about this destination. Luxembourg is a little gem … just waiting to be discovered. There is pristine farmland, beautiful river valleys and very impressive medieval towns. You’ll never forget your visit to the Vianden Castle and Echternach is a must-see while you visit.
The weather is Luxembourg is quite mild year-round, but the most popular time to visit is during the summer. The warm weather of summer, the early fall grape harvest, the beautiful green in springtime and winter, Christmas markets makes a Luxembourg destination vacation fabulous. November, January and February are the least popular times to visit, likely because the weather is kind of blah and there is limited access to many venues.
Things to Do
Just because Luxembourg is small doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do during your vacation. You can take some time to explore the beauty and quite of the Ardennes area, visit breweries and sample Luxembourg alcohol in Diekirch and Wiltz or even visit a medieval market town (Echternach).
If you enjoy exploring the great outdoors, try heading to the Müllerthal region (Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland”). There you’ll find dense, beautiful forests, crystal-clear brooks and breathtaking rock formations. Müllerthal is the most popular area for hiking or walking … plus there are some awesome castles you can see.
If hiking isn’t your cup of tea, try heading to Plâteau du Kirchberg. This area is home to a thriving international financial center, European institutions, the biggest cinema complex and a shopping mall.
Eating and Drinking
Luxembourg food is kind of a combination of German, Belgian and French cuisine. As with many areas, the food in Luxembourg is influenced by the areas that are closely surrounding it. You’ll also find that there is some Italian and Portuguese influence because there have been many immigrants from those areas. Some of the most notable Luxembourg food is smoked Ardennes ham (called jambon d’ardennes by natives), smoked pork and broad beans (carre de porc fume), jellied suckling pig (yum!) (cochon de lait en gelee) If the suckling pig doesn’t sound good to you, don’t worry … Luxembourg has some delightful desserts you can enjoy.
Shopping
There are two main shopping centers in Luxembourg City – the Oberstadt and the Unterstadt. The Unterstadt shopping center begins at the Central Station. Here you’ll find fashion boutiques, jewelers, TV, video and photo shops.
If you’re looking for leather goods and international name-brand shoes and fashion, you’ll want to head to the Obserstadt shopping center. This area is a paradise for anyone who loves to shop, especially if you love precious jewelry and watches. And, while you are out shopping, don’t forget to heave over to the Gallery Grand – you’ll be in heaven as you walk through fashion, jewelry and perfume boutiques.
